Julidochromis marlieri lives in the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika. They are substrate spawners that lay eggs on the ceiling or crevices of rocks and caves. In the aquaria, J. marlieri is one of the easier Tanganyikan rift lake cichlids to keep due to their high tolerance to decreasing water conditions, mild temparement, willingness to take most pellet and flake foods, and ability to thrive and breed in a tank as small as 20 gallons. Breeding is easy compaired to other tanganyikan cichlids though it may take several months after sexual maturity before a small group will pair off and breed. Once paired it is recommended that the other members of the group are separated to avoid increased aggression as the parents protect their brood. Small clutches of 10-20 eggs are laid during the first batch, but clutch size usually increase in subsequent batches. "Julies" are definitely a great addition to a mixed tanganyikan cichlid tank.
